Chinchillas are native to the Andes Mountains of northern Chile and are famous for their luxurious soft fur and. People’s craziness for them led them almost to extinction. With selective breeding, there can be seen chinchillas of many colours such as silver, bluish-grey, yellowish-grey, white, black etc. To pet a chinchilla, you need to know ways to take care of them. For further information, you can check http://chinchillacaregroup.com/and similar other websites where they have elaborative details about everything you need to know.

Requirements for cages of chinchilla:

If you want to see your pet healthy, you need to keep them in large cages otherwise they will be depressed because of lack of proper environment.

• The minimum size of the cage for an adult chinchilla should be 3 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet. Chinchillas are a social creature which makes it better to keep more than one chinchilla in a cage. If you want to keep more than one chinchilla in a cage, you need to make sure that each of them gets 2 square feet of floor space. Be aware of the materials of the cage and place plywood or other solid material in the cage floor if it’s made of wire.

• The cage should have multiple levels so that chinchillas can climb or jump whenever they feel like. Chinchillas can jump as high as 6 feet. So, if you have enough space, install a cage as tall as possible. In case of shortage of space, focusing on length is better than focusing on height.

• Make the placement of the cage in such a way that there is no direct sunlight in that place and at the same time the place is not humid or damp. Remember that chinchillas cannot tolerate extreme heat and also you need to clean the cage for maintaining a good health of your pet.

• A constant supply of fresh water and appropriate food is a very important factor. In addition, chinchillas need some furnishings such as dust bath, hiding corners etc. Regular dust baths help them clean their dense furs. There is a special chinchilla dust which you can find in the pet stores and you have to place it in a large bowl. You need to do it few times a week where your chinchilla will take a dust bath. If you keep chinchillas in pairs, you can give hiding places such as small boxes inside the cage for distraction and sleeping.

• You need to make sure you get the pet out of the box daily for exercise and give space to run or roam around. You need to keep them on supervision while you let them roam around outside the cage because they have a tendency to bite everything and can end up biting electric wires or any of your important belongings.

Chinchilla has the habit of gnawing and chewing things which keeps their teeth in good condition. As chinchillas are very curious and always want to explore, make the area chinchilla-proof before allowing them outside the cage
